Conference Aim

Now, in the 21 st century, when internationalization and globalization are becoming ever more important, it is essential that basic university education cover all aspects of student's personal development. It must confirm students' own individual values, give them an understanding of the close relationship between the individual, society, the country and the world, advance their professional abilities, increase their international competitiveness and make them good citizens of the world.

Although Kainan University can be said to be a relatively new part of the higher education system in Taiwan, it is firmly based on the application of the above mentioned concepts. The aim of this school has from its inception been totally focused on advancing the task of educating our students, an objective that The 2007 International Seminar on Fundamental University Education will invite academics and specialists from every field to participate in and discuss. It is hoped that this exchange of opinions will result in a common effort towards deepening fundamental university education, both in Taiwan and the world.

Guidelines for Papers

Papers should be written in accordance with the Kainan University General Education Center guidelines (attached). Please see our web page for a summary of regulations regarding papers.

Guidelines for Papers

I. Content

1. All papers should be in Mandarin, except those dealing with Foreign Language

departments

2. Please write horizontally, from left to right. Please layout pages in the

following manner:

A. Please print papers on white A4 paper

B. Please use 3 cm top and bottom margins, with a 3 cm left margin and 2 cm right margin. If you use double sided printing, please start each chapter on an odd numbered page, and format odd-numbered pages in

accordance with the above guidelines. Even-numbered pages should have

a left margin of 2 cm and a right margin of 3 cm.

C. Please use 12 point New Ximing font.

D. Number all pages from the first page of the text of the paper to the final page in the paper. Use arabic numbers (New Times Roman font) placed in the bottom center of each page. For pages such as abstracts, table of contents etc. please use roman numerals, placed in the bottom center of each page.

3. Table of Contents

A. Table of Contents should include the introduction, each chapter and section of the paper. Elements such as tables, illustrations, appendices, references, and index should be noted after the conclusion of the paper.

B. If there are between five and ten tables and illustrations, they should be included in a joint category of the table of contents.

C. If there are five or more of both tables and illustrations, each should have their own category in the table of contents

4. The main paper should follow the table of contents, and be written in accordance with section 2 above. The table of contents should start on an

odd-numbered page. The title of every chapter should be written in bold. The main text should be written in New Ximing font, or New Times Roman font in the case of an English language paper.

5. Quotes from other authors should be placed in ( “”). Quotes of over 4 lines should begin on a new line, be indented 3 characters in from the left margin, and printed in a 10 point font. The right margin should not be indented.

6. If there are illustrations or charts in the paper, they should appear after the section of the document pertaining to them.

7. The titles of illustrations should appear below the illustration, while the titles of charts should appear above the chart.

8. When charts and illustrations take up more than one page then this should be clearly noted on the relevant parts of the diagram.

9. Appendices should follow the main text of the paper. Appendices should begin on odd-numbered pages, and should follow the same page format as the main text.

10. References should follow appendices, should begin on an odd-numbered page and should follow the same page format as the main text.

 

II. Reference Format

1. For references within the text:

(author, date: page)

Example: (Churchland, 1995: 68-69)

2. When the text already contains the authors name:

Author (date: page)

Example: Churchland (1995: 68-69)

3. To add an explanation to the text, please use footnotes. Footnotes should be placed at the bottom of each page and follow the format bellow:

A. Footnotes reference numbers should be place at the very end of the sentence containing the text they pertain to.

B. Footnote numbers should be in accordance with the National Library Electronic Archives guidelines, and consecutive numbers should be used for the entire document.

D. Footnotes should be written in 10 point New Ximing font.

 

III. Reference Works Format

1. The Reference works section should be the final section in the paper, and begin on a new page. Chinese language reference works should be listed separate from Western reference works. All Chinese reference works should be listed in accordance with the number of strokes of the author's name, and date of publication, while Western works should be listed in accordance with the alphabetical order of author's name, and date of publication.

If references are complex, they should be arranged in the following categories

•  Books
•  Journal articles
•  Thesis
•  General articles, such as Government reports
•  Newspaper articles
•  Internet publications

2. Serial numbers need not be noted. Chinese reference works should be listed in accordance with the number of strokes in the Author's surname. Authors with identical surnames should be listed in accordance with the number of strokes in the first character of the author's given name. Western reference works should listed in accordance to the alphabetical order of authors' surnames, with the surname of the author first, followed by the given name(s), separated by a comma (,).

3. Chinese text should use 12 point New Ximing font. Western text and Arabic numerals should use 12 point New Times Roman font.

4. The titles of Chinese reference works should be followed by a “。” , and then the place of publication. The titles of Western reference works should be followed by a “ . ” , and then the place of publication. English language journals should use a “ . ” Following the date of publication.

5. For a work with two authors: For Chinese works, authors ' names should be separated by a “、” ; For Western works, authors ' names should be separated by “ and ” .

6. For a work with three authors: For Chinese works, the first and second authors ' names should be separated by a “、” , with the second and third authors ' names separated by a “與” ; For Western works, the first and second authors ' names should be separated by a “ , ” , with the second and third authors ' names separated by “ and ” .

7. For a work with more than three authors: for Chinese works, only first author ' s name is listed, followed by “等” ; for Western works all authors ' names are listed, separated by “ , ” , expect for the last two authors whose names are separated by “ and ” .

8. The second and subsequent lines of any one reference should be indented by 2 characters (4 bytes).

9. Works published by the same author should be listed in accordance with date of publication, with the most recent first. For the second and subsequent publications by the same author, authors name should be replaced by “__________”, 3 characters long for Chinese names and 8 characters long for Western names.

10. For works published by the same author in the same year, the letters ‘a, b, c…' should be appended after the date to distinguish particular works.

e.g. Chen, Qiqing, 2002a ….

________ 2002b….

11. For works published in major US cities, only the city name is required for place of publication. For works published in smaller cities, please include the abbreviation for the State where the city is located, in accordance with the guidelines below

•  From the Zhongshan expressway take the Airport branch road (national highway No. 2) towards Bade and exit and the “Southern Taoyuan Interchange”.

•  From the North 2 expressway Airport branch road (national highway No. 2) towards Taoyuan International Airport and exit and the “Southern Taoyuan Interchange”.

Once at the interchange head towards Taoyuan, turn left onto Guoji road, turn left onto Yongan road and left again onto Xinxing road.

From Taoyuan train station: Take any Taiyuan Keyun bus which passes through Dazhu:
